Medium/Long-Term Efficiency of Struvite for Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) Production: Effect on Soil Quality

Abstract: The global rise in population highlights the need for a greater production of quality food. In this regard, intensification of the agricultural sector and an increased use of fertilizers are key. Phosphorus (P), together with nitrogen (N) and potassium (K), is one of the essential elements for plant growth. Modern agriculture is dependent on P derived from phosphate rock, which is a non-renewable resource whose high-quality reserves are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. In this context, alternative s… Show more

“…Soil biota play an important role in the soil P cycle (Alori et al, 2017;Le Bayon and Milleret, 2009) and may have an impact on plant P uptake from struvite. Struvite fertilisation led to a more diverse and active microbial community compared to Mono-Ammonium Phosphate (MAP) and Simple Superphosphate (SSP) in a lettuce pot experiment (Mancho et al, 2023). Another relevant group of soil biota that can affect P availability is earthworms.…”
