Megaloneurite, a giant neurite of vasoactive intestinal peptide and nitric oxide synthase in the aged dog and identification by human sacral spinal cord

Abstract: Megaloneurite of NADPH diaphorase (NADPH-d) positivity is a new kind of aging-related neurodegeneration and also co-localized with vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in the sacral spinal cord of aged dog and monkey. However, no immunocytochemistry of VIP was exclusively tested in the aged dog and no evidence has been reported in the aged human spinal cord. Aged dogs were used to examine the distribution of VIP immunopositivity in the sacral spinal cord. Immunocytochemistry of VIP and alpha-synuclein were also… Show more

“…The case study was completed in a 10-year-old dog accompanied by spinal disc herniation. We have already reported the megaloneurite in the sacral spinal cord of aged dog [9,14]. In this study, the N-d positive megaloneurite occurred conformally in the sacral spinal cord.…”

“…The aging-related N-d neurodegeneration occurred normally in the lumbosacral spinal cord of the aged dog [9,14]. In the thoracic segment rostral to the disc herniation, no megaloneurite and homogeneous formazan globules were detected besides occasional small size ANBs (Figure 7).…”

“…Next, we examined the same segment of the sacral spinal cord in aged dog. As the previous investigation, the ANBs and megaloneurites were detected in the sacral spinal cord in aged dog [24,29]. The caudal sacral spinal cord occurred relative a smaller number of the megaloneurites than the rostral sacral.…”

“…The distribution of the N-d fibers kept consistent with the VIPergic fibers distributed in the around the central canal and the anterior fissure. In our previous study, we also find that the VIP-ergic fibers distribute around the central canal [29]. Meanwhile, N-d megaloneurites and some fibers co-localize with VIP [22,54].…”
