Meiotic abnormalities of Vaccinium ashei × Vaccinium darrowi hybrids

Abstract: GOLDY, R. G., and P. M. LYRENE. 1984. Meiotic abnormalities of Vac.c.inium czshei x Vncac-inium dnrrowi hybrids. Can. J.Genet. Cytol. 26: 146-151. Meiosis was studied in pollen mother cells of three Vncc-inium nshei (2n = 6.u = 72) x Vncc.inium dtrrrowi ( 2 n = 2x = 24) hybrids. Numerous irregularities were found, including 60 somatic chromosomes instead of the expected 48, two synezetic knots, two nucleolar organizing regions, lagging chromosomes at anaphase 1 and 11, nonassociating chromosomes, meiotic async… Show more

“…4): (1) Two synezetic knots and nucleolar organizing regions (NOR) were seen during meiotic prophase in one cell of clone FL98-93. Similar observations were described in V. darrowii 9 V. virgatum hybrids by Goldy and Lyrene (1983). In that report, it was postulated that the V. darrowii and V. virgatum genomes could sometimes act independently of each other.…”

“…1-3). The strong triploid block in Vaccinium and the relatively low frequency of 2n gametes required that a very large numbers of flowers be pollinated (Cockerham and Galleta, 1976;Goldy and Lyrene, 1984;Marks, 1966;Moore, 1965;Lyrene and Sherman, 1983;Ortiz et al, 1992aOrtiz et al, , 1992bSharpe and Darrow, 1959;Woodell and Valentine, 1961). With so many flowers pollinated, low levels of selfing may have occurred and the morphology of seedlings was examined to confirm that they were in fact interspecific hybrids.…”

“…Sterile pollen grains in water or aceto-carmine appeared shriveled, unstained, or abnormal in shape, and had varying degrees of pollen inflation (Dermen, 1940). Abnormal pollen grains may result from chromosome pairing abnormalities during meiosis (Goldy and Lyrene, 1984;Lyrene and Sherman, 1983).…”
