Melancholia and cancer: The bladder cancer narrative

Abstract: Patients who undergo treatment for muscle‐invasive bladder cancer have a 50% risk of developing a posttreatment psychiatric diagnosis, the most prevalent of which is substance abuse, and such diagnoses are associated with worse cancer‐specific and overall survival. Further research into the application of distress instruments is paramount for the early identification and treatment of at risk patients.
