Melanoma incidence and patient compliance in a targeted melanoma screening intervention. One-year follow-up in a large French cohort of high-risk patients

Abstract: Performing this targeted screening in a high-risk population resulted in a high melanoma detection rate, despite moderate compliance. Observations suggest that naming a dermatologist is a simple, inexpensive means of increasing patient compliance with the screening.

“…The study strengths were its analysis of an on-going melanoma targeted screening intervention that has previously demonstrated benefits [ 13 , 14 ] and the basis of the study on a reproducible screening method using a validated tool. [ 15 ] Additional strengths were a large patient cohort and a population recruited from a primary care setting.…”

“…This cross-sectional comparison database study was part of a wider targeted melanoma screening project entitled “COhort of PAtient at elevated RIsk of MElanoma” (COPARIME, http://clinicaltrials.gov NCT01610531). [ 14 ] The reported data were collected in western France from 11 April to 30 October 2011. The characteristics of the patients who consulted at the GP offices during the inclusion period were extracted from the national healthcare insurance system administrative records.…”

“…Reported calculations of melanoma risk from observational studies of various melanoma risk factors among the subjects, although differences in number of subjects and length of follow-up may also have been a factor [3][4][5][6][7]. Melanoma incidence rates (IR) per subject per year ranged from 0.0023 to 0.007 in low-risk subjects with self-reported risk factors and atypical nevi, to 0.015-0.019 in medium-risk subjects with personal or family history of melanoma and numerous nevi, to 0.08 in high-risk subjects including those with multiple primary melanomas and melanoma-predisposing germline mutations(Table 1).…”

“…Both Jørgensen and Braun report a major limitation of the EUROMELANOMA campaigns conducted in the general population at average risk of melanoma: only 24% of the participants (263/1,087) agreed to be followed up [8-10]. Braun analyzed the major question as “whether we screen the right people, i.e.…”
