Melanopsis from the Pleistocene site of ’Ubeidiya, Jordan Valley: direct evidence of early hybridization (Gastropoda: Cerithioidea)

Abstract: ’Ubeidiya is a 1.4 Myr‐old Lower‐Pleistocene site in the Jordan Valley. Its rich Melanopsis fauna was found to include five species: buccinoidea, costata, turriformis, phanesiana obediensis and multiformis. These species and their conchiometrics are described. M. buccinoidea and costata occur in the Levant also today whereas turriformis, p. obediensis and multiformis are extinct. These findings suggest considerable faunal connections between the Jordan, the Orontes and perhaps also Rodhos during the lower… Show more

“…Often, distinct morphologies are bound to certain environmental conditions. Heller & Sivan (2002) showed strong correlation of morphotypes with flow current in Pleistocene melanopsids of the Jordan Valley. Smooth and slender forms represent agitated environments, dwelling within or in the proximity of rivers.…”

“…In the sperm, the midpiece is exceptionally long (Hodgson & Heller, 2000); the radula is highly variable (Mazan‐Mamczarz et al ., 2002). The variability range of allozymes is exceptionally wide, with populations scattered among clusters of other species, suggesting a broad extent of hybridization with other species (Falniowski et al ., 2002a, b) that has been going on in the Levant since the Lower Pleistocene and is still widespread today (Heller et al ., 1999; Heller & Sivan, 2002a: table 1).…”

“…Parasites include the eye fluke Philopthalamus lucipetus (Rudolphi, 1819) (Radev et al ., 1999). In the Levant, fossils of M. buccinoidea are known from the mid‐Pleistocene, Lower Pleistocene and Pliocene of the Jordan Valley (Heller & Sivan, 2001, 2002a, b). Both Glaubrecht (1993) and Falniowski et al .…”
