“…A similar change in the growth of lipid droplets number in each cell was observed in HCD ZT01, HCD ZT11, and HCD water compared to that in HCD amount by 67 %, 2.8-fold (have reached control level), and 3.5-fold (more than control by 17 %), respectively. This shift in beige adipocyte morphology after melatonin use can be associated with an increased functional activity of thermogenesis, mitochondrial biogenesis, and lipolysis, as shown in vivo (Liu et al, 2019) and in vitro (Kato et al, 2015) in previous studies.…”

“…Another interesting property of a single melatonin dose (2.5 mg) is to reduce rectal temperature during intermittent exercise in a hot environment without any alertness [193]. Independently from physical training, Liu et al reported that melatonin (20 mg/kg) intravenously administered for four weeks enhanced lipolysis in mice vastus lateralis muscle by activating the "browning" effect in the adipose tissue and thermogenesis [194].…”

“…Melatonin treatment has also been shown to reduce fat mass (and percentage of body fat) with a concomitant increase of lean mass in postmenopausal women following 1 year of treatment compared to placebo (13). Studies now suggest that melatonin treatment may stimulate lipolysis through the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, as well as stimulate intramuscular adipocyte lipolysis via activation of both extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 and protein kinase A (PKA) signaling (14, 15). Taken together, these studies begin to demonstrate a potential role for melatonin in modulating body weight, specifically through its regulation of fat mass.…”
