With the aggravation of the unprecedented greenhouse effect, the reduction of greenhouse gases which mainly consist of CO 2 has caught high attention by global scholars. The membrane absorption of CO 2 from the flue gas seems a promising alternative to conventional absorption methods like chemical absorption. In this article, the principles of the membrane absorption process were discussed. The research development and current status of CO 2 capture in flue gas using a hollow fiber membrane contactor were reviewed. The affecting factors included the membrane structure and material, module connection form, gas and liquid flow pattern and absorbent. Also, these factors that affected the separation performance of mass transfer processes, as well as the mass transfer coefficients and models for CO 2 absorption were critically discussed in the tube side, shell side and membrane. Also, an experiment system for CO 2 absorption in a membrane contactor was dipicted. The modeling works were validated with experimental results. Additionally, the deficiencies of present development in membrane gas absorption of acid gases and recommendations for future pilot-scale applications were proposed.

It is generally accepted that carbon capture and storage strategies will play a crucial role for mitigating CO 2 emissions at short-and mid-term scenarios. In this study, a membrane gas absorption process was assessed as potential candidate method for CO 2 capture in a Greek brick production industry. The membrane contactor pilot unit was installed near the flue, where a slip stream of the flue gases was continuously sampled and fed in the hollow fiber membrane module. A 0.25 M aqueous diethanolamine solution was used as a typical solvent for CO 2 capture. The % CO 2 removal was chosen as a typical performance indicator and the liquid to gas flow ratio was chosen as the main controlling variable of the process. The test results indicate that almost complete CO 2 removal can be attained with a liquid to gas flow rate around 1, demonstrating the high potential of the proposed technology.

Membrane gas absorption (MGA) is one of the most attractive technologies among the osmotically driven membrane processes because of its configurational advantages with respect to the conventional absorption systems that use packed bed columns for different industrial applications. Nowadays, membrane gas absorption is used in industrial wastewater treatment, CO 2 absorption from greenhouse gases, treatment of flue-gas and off-gas streams, which contain SO 2 ,H 2 S, NH 3 or HCl, upgrading and desulphurization of biogas from anaerobic digesters and landfills and acid gas removal of natural gas and olefin-paraffin separation in the petrochemical industry, among other applications. In this framework, the advantages of membrane gas absorption over packed bed processes are related to the decreasing of installation surface requirements through compact process design and easy operation modes. These aspects will increase the applications of these types of processes in the mid-term. Nevertheless, the main design criteria of this technology have been poorly addressed in the literature. This chapter summarizes the fundamental aspects of transport phenomena that drive these processes, as well as the main conceptual aspects, to propose a correct design through an overview of the current status of this technology and its potential applications, challenges and future trends.
