Membrane Rafts: Portals for Viral Entry

Abstract: Membrane rafts are dynamic, small (10–200 nm) domains enriched with cholesterol and sphingolipids that compartmentalize cellular processes. Rafts participate in roles essential to the lifecycle of different viral families including virus entry, assembly and/or budding events. Rafts seem to participate in virus attachment and recruitment to the cell surface, as well as the endocytic and non-endocytic mechanisms some viruses use to enter host cells. In this review, we will introduce the specific role of rafts in… Show more

“…Blocking the priming or the proteolytic cleavage are possible targets for early drug interventions (Hoffmann et al, 2020b). Recent studies on the host cell membrane and viral interactions have brought novel insights into the role of cellular lipids in the process of viral entry (Carpinteiro et al, 2020;Ripa et al, 2021). Particularly, sphingolipids have been shown to affect cell entry of bacteria and of different viruses (Schneider-Schaulies and Schneider-Schaulies, 2015;Simonis and Schubert-Unkmeir, 2018).…”

“…Endocytic pathways can be classified into three classes: (i) Endocytic pathways that take place in lipid rafts, which include the majority of clathrin-independent endocytic pathways such as caveolae-mediated endocytosis 24,25 . (ii) pathways that do not involve lipid rafts in the endocytic vesicle, namely clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) 2,24 .…”
