Men Presenting with Sexual Thoughts of Children or Coercion: Flights of Fancy or Plans for Crime?

Abstract: Introduction. There is limited evaluation of clinical and theoretical claims that sexual thoughts of children and coercing others facilitate sexual offending. The nature of these thoughts (what they contain) is also unknown.Aims. To examine the relationship between child/coercive sexual thoughts and sexual offending, and to determine the nature of these thoughts and any differences between sexual offending (SO), non-sexual offending (NSO) and non-offending (NO) men.Methods. In a cross-sectional computerized su… Show more

“…Thus, the memory of a prior sexual experience or a stored sexual fantasy may be variably recalled into consciousness as a sexual thought (Bartels & Beech, 2017; Spiering & Everaerd, 2007). While harmful sexual interests are not causal for corresponding behavior, researchers have proposed that moderating mechanisms may include specific thought characteristics, such as vividness and frequency (Turner-Moore & Waterman, 2017). Similarly, Palk and O’Gorman (2004) suggested that population-specific cognitive processing may be responsible for the prevention of habituation in sexual fantasy arousal for sex offenders.…”

“…For example, it is possible that sexual fantasies involving children (rather than adults) wearing school uniform may result from the use of Adult-as-Schoolgirl fantasies. Previous research indicates that fantasies of children in school uniform is a common theme pertaining to child-specific sexual fantasies in both community men and men who have sexually offended (Turner-Moore & Waterman, 2017). Thus, examining the link between Adult-as-Schoolgirl sexual fantasies and fantasies of children wearing schoolgirl uniform would be beneficial for unpacking the role that the former may play in potentially increasing the risk of sexual offending.…”

“…In forensic psychology/sexology, sexual interests (fantasies, desires, urges) or preference for illegal behaviors represent clear (and rather evident) risk factors for recidivism (Hanson & Morton-Bourgon, 2005;Mann et al, 2010). It comes as no surprise, for instance, that men who have sexually offended against children are more likely to report pedophilic sexual fantasies than other men (e.g., Grundmann et al, 2016;Turner-Moore & Waterman, 2017). Consequently, most theories of sexual offending include sexual interests involving non-consenting behaviors as significant risk factors for the commission of that behavior (e.g., Abel & Blanchard, 1974;Prentky et al, 1989;Ward & Siegert, 2002; see Bartels & Gannon, 2011 for a review).…”
