Mennen Plate Fixation for Fractures of the Femoral Shaft after Ipsilateral Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract: We performed osteosynthesis with the use of a Mennen plate for six patients with femoral fractures in the vicinity of the stem, which occurred after ipsilateral hip arthroplasty. The fixation was so favorable that postoperative deformity was slight. At 4 months after surgery, bone fusion was obtained in all patients, and their hip joint functions recovered to the preinjury level. For femoral fractures in the vicinity of the stem after ipsilateral arthroplasty, there are no suitable fixation methods other than … Show more

“…The ''Mennen plate'' has been used for the treatment of periprosthetic femoral fractures. Although the plate offered some benefits for this indication, several surgeons have described pitfalls such as non-unions and implant failure using this implant type [47][48][49][50][51][52].…”

“…Zur Osteosynthese können Cerclagen, Platten, in Ausnahmefällen spezielle Nägel sowie andere Spezialimplantate verwendet werden [6,9,12,14,15,24,25,27,28]. Auch über den Einsatz der Mennenplatte wird berichtet [8]. Sichere Aussagen zur erreichten postoperativen Stabilität sind nicht allen Publikationen zu entnehmen.…”

“…In cases of stable prostheses, open reduction and internal fixation employs either cortical onlay allografts (Chandler and Tigges 1998), dynamic compression plates (DCPs), or special plates such as the Ogden, the Dall-Miles or the Mennen plates (Zenni et al 1988, Serocki et al 1992, Uchio et al 1997, Jukkala-Partio et al 1998, Tower and Beals 1999, Tadross et al 2000. Alternatively, combined medial and lateral allograft struts with cerclage cables or lateral plating with a single anterior or medial allograft strut may be used (Ries 1997, Tower andBeals 1999).…”
