“…Notably, the lack of a relationship between vicarious chronic physical health strain and delinquency found here is corroborated by prior research suggesting that one’s own acute health problems create strain for individuals to engage in delinquency and misconduct, rather than experiences of chronic illness (Grosholz & Semenza, 2018; Semenza & Grosholz, 2019; Stogner & Gibson, 2010, 2011; Stogner et al, 2014). “…In particular, the research that analyzes acute physical health issues (e.g., headaches, joint pain, cold or flu, etc.) and chronic health ailments separately finds that the increase in crime and misconduct is largely associated with experiencing acute health problems (Grosholz & Semenza, 2018; Semenza & Grosholz, 2019; Stogner & Gibson, 2010; Stogner et al, 2014). While vicarious measures of acute physical illness were not available among these data, we expect that vicarious acute physical health strain would be associated with juvenile delinquency given past findings.…”

“…Moreover, the prevalence of infectious diseases among incarcerated populations well surpasses that of non-incarcerated populations (Taxman & Ressler, 2010). In addition to these significant physical health disparities, rates of co-occurring disorders including behavioral health problems (e.g., substance misuse and mental health conditions) are alarming (Semenza & Grosholz, 2019).…”
