Background Newly recruited nurses face multiple sources of stress and their coping styles need to be focused on to ensure good mental health. This study aimed to examine the relationship among mental health literacy, psychological capital and coping styles in newly recruited nurses. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in August and September 2022. A total of 315 newly recruited nurses were recruited in a tertiary hospital in Henan Province, central China, employing the convenience sampling method. The self-reported questionnaires were sent through a QR code, including the Mental Health Literacy Scale for Healthcare Students, Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire. Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationships among the variables. Mediation analysis was performed to identify the mediating effect of psychological capital on the relationship between mental health literacy and coping styles. Results Positive coping showed a positive relationship with psychological capital and mental health literacy, while negative coping showed a negative relationship with psychological capital and mental health literacy. For positive coping, psychological capital was a partial mediator with an effect of 0.140, accounting for 62.8%. For negative coping, a full mediating effect was shown by psychological capital between mental health literacy and negative coping, with an indirect effect of -0.048. Conclusion Psychological capital plays a partial and complete mediating role between mental health literacy and different coping styles among newly recruited nurses. Diversified training and personalized guidance in improving mental health literacy and increasing psychological capital simultaneously can be provided to newly recruited nurses continuously to adjust their coping styles.

Literasi kesehatan mental merupakan pengetahuan dan keyakinan tentang gangguan kesehatan mental yang membantu mengenali, mengelola, dan mencegah gangguan mental. Dibutuhkan adanya literasi kesehatan mental untuk memanfaatkan pelayanan kesehatan dan pengobatan untuk mengatasi gangguan mental. Dengan kondisi tersebut penelitian ini bertujuan menelaah lebih dekat keseharian pasien Rumah Sakit Jiwa (RSJ) dalam mengimplementasikan literasi kesehatan mental. Teknik penjaringan data dilakukan dengan observasi dan wawancara pada Juni hingga Oktober 2022. Hasilnya informan memahami gangguan mental, pengetahuan tempat pelayanan kesehatan, dan pengobatan yang tepat. Dengan saling mengenal ragam diagnosa gangguan mental lainnya pengetahuan pasien dan kemampuan bersosialisasi untuk berintegrasi dengan masyarakat bertambah. Pada dasarnya dengan hadirnya pasien di RSJ, literasi kesehatan mental telah diimplementasikan. Namun dorongan untuk mendapatkan literasi kesehatan mental masih terdapat stigma. Simpulannya, masih terdapat faktor penghambat literasi kesehatan mental, yaitu stigma. Apabila seseorang melihat anggota masyarakat yang mengalami gejala gangguan mental, maka dapat dibawa ke bantuan profesional kesehatan mental, salah satunya RSJ, tanpa perlu memberikan stigma. Sebagai pasien RSJ, para informan juga dapat bersikap seperti orang yang tidak terdiagnosa gangguan mental; memiliki rasa ingin tahu yang tinggi, dan mampu mencapai cita-citanya. Misalnya, salah satu di antara mereka dapat melanjutkan studi lanjut ke Inggris. Hal ini dapat menjadi salah satu acuan untuk menghalau stigma tersebut. Oleh karena itu, dibutuhkan saling pemahaman antara pasien gangguan mental dengan masyarakat luas.

Mental Health Literacy and Stigma in a Municipality in the North of Portugal: A Cross-Sectional Study

Portugal has Europe’s second-highest prevalence of psychiatric illnesses, and this is the reason why mental health literacy (MHL) and stigma should be addressed. This study aimed to investigate the mental health literacy and stigma levels among different groups of people from Póvoa de Varzim, a municipality in the north of Portugal. Students, retired people, and professionals (education, social, and healthcare fields) were recruited using a convenience sample from June to November 2022. Participants’ MHL levels were evaluated using the Mental Health Promoting Knowledge Scale (MHPK), Mental Health Literacy Measure (MHLM) and Mental Health Knowledge Schedule (MAKS). Stigma levels were evaluated using Community Attitudes towards Mental Illness (CAMI) and the Reported and Intended Behaviour Scale (RIBS). A total of 928 questionnaires were filed. The respondents included 65.70% of women, a mean age of 43.63 (±26.71) years and 9.87 (±4.39) years of school education. MHL increased with age, education level and was higher in women (p < 0.001). A higher level of MHL was seen in health professionals (p < 0.001). Findings revealed that older people stigmatized people with mental illness more (p < 0.001), and the female gender stigmatize less (p < 0.001). In addition, results showed that stigma decreased with higher mental health literacy (r between 0.11 and 0.38; p < 0.001). To conclude, specific campaigns that promote mental health literacy should be tailored to specific profiles within this population to address those that have more stigma.
