“…More than 15 years ago Torrey (1972) suggested that the amount of agreement between patient and therapist about what constitutes good mental health is an important determinant of psychotherapy efficacy. Consistent with this expectation, Tyler et al (1989) found that positive treatment results for inpatient chemical dependency patients were associated with pre-treatment congruence between counselor and patient on the MHVQ factors of Negative Traits, Achievement, and Affective Control. Contrary to Torrey's hypothesis, however, positive therapeutic response was also associated with counselor-patient disagreement about the relevance to good mental health of the MHVQ dimensions of Self-Acceptance, Good Interpersonal Relations, Religious Commitment, and Receptivity to Unconventional Experience.…”

“…The finding that neither professional group membership nor theoretical orientation was associated with unique patterns of mental health values is difficult to attribute to measurement insensitivity because in other studies significant MHVQ differences have been found between ethnic groups and between the sexes (Bjork, 1988;Tyler et al, 1983;Tyler et al, 1989). It seems more likely that either mental health values are stable and change little during the course of one's professional education or that trainers from different disciplines or theoretical orientations do not differ systematically in their treatment of mental health values.…”

“…The MHVQ yields scores for eight factor scales: Self-Acceptance, Negative Traits, Achievement, Affective Control, Good Interpersonal Relations, Untrustworthiness, Religious Commitment, and Receptivity to Unconventional Experiences. Tyler, Clark, and Wittenstrom (1989) found that inpatient chemical dependency treatment outcome was associated with degree of agreement between counselor and patient on several MHVQ dimensions. Bjork (1988) and Tyler et al (1983) reported gender differences on MHVQ scales, and Haugen, Tyler, and Clark (1989) found that mental health value differences between professional therapists were associated with gender and with the geographic area in which the therapist was raised.…”
