Mental models of adherence: parallels in perceptions, values, and expectations in adherence to prescribed home exercise programs and other personal regimens

Abstract: Parallels between mental models of adherence for prescribed home exercise and other personal regimens suggest that patients adherence behavior to prescribed routines may be influenced by adherence experiences in other aspects of their lives. “…The findings of this study confirmed hypothesis 1, in which social support was a significant and positive predictor of exercise adherence among college students. This is consistent with the results of previous studies [ 36 , 37 ] and, again, validates that social support is an important factor predicting exercise adherence. Ecosystem theory suggests that the development of an individual is nested in a systemic environment that interacts with each other, and that the system and individual interact with each other and drive the individual’s continuous development, thus emphasizing the importance of the external environment to the individual’s behavior [ 38 ].…”

“…Importantly, this knowledge could also be important to practitioners delivering an RT program to PCa patients. Findings from the behavioral literature indicate that individual values, perceived benefits and expected outcomes, can influence the adoption of health behaviors [ 41 , 42 ]. Consequently, knowledge of expected outcomes from RT could help practitioners appropriately guide PCa patients’ expectations regarding anticipated outcomes.…”

“…Achieving adherence to treatment can be a difficult task and requires continuous patient education [44]. At times, even the best efforts fail, because adherence to the exercises prescribed will depend on the patient's individual environment, as well as other factors such as personality and historical adherence to other regimens [45].…”
