“…As Heseker et al (1990) found an improvement in mood using a 3-mg supplement, it seems likely that a dose lower than that used in the present experiment would have proved to have been effective. Harrell (1946) examined children who ate a diet that supplied 1 mg thiamine a day, to boys for whom the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) was 1 mg a day, and to girls for whom it was 0.9 mg. A priori, this diet would have been said to supply an adequate amount of thiamine. Yet after taking 2 mg thiamine, each day for a year, in a double-blind study, those who took the vitamin were significantly taller, had better eye-sight, quicker reaction times, and scored better on tests of memory and intelligence.…”

A rare exception is Harrell [26], who gave thiamin supplements for a year to children whose diet, as judged by the RDA, supplied suffi cient of this vitamin. In this double-blind study after a year those taking thiamin were significantly taller, had quicker reaction times and scored better on tests of mem ory and intelligence.…”
