Mentoplasty — A clinical analysis of alloplastic implants

Abstract: Different types of alloplastic implants are currently being utilized in performing mentoplasty. A review of the literature points out the number of prostheses that have been used. Each type of material has inherit physical properties which determine its characteristics for use as a chin implant. The type of implant and method selected in chin augmentation depends upon accurate preoperative evaluation and full understanding of the properties of alloplastic substances. Five hundred and thirty-nine cases of chin … Show more

“…In addition, it should maintain a stable shape and size over time and, if the need arises, be easy to remove. 23 Currently, in the senior author's opinion, the ideal alloplastic material for mandibular implantation is Silastic. This material is flexible yet firm, can be carved if needed, and, although it does induce the formation of a surrounding capsule, is otherwise nonreactive to surrounding tissue.…”

“…This material is flexible yet firm, can be carved if needed, and, although it does induce the formation of a surrounding capsule, is otherwise nonreactive to surrounding tissue. 23 In the past, central chin implants were commonly used, but they often migrated, resulting in an abnormally pointed appearance (Fig. 25.4).…”

“…In evaluating a patient's suitability for chin implantation, it is important to recognize that micrognathia, retrognathia, and/or vertical lowerfacial height inadequacy are not 'corrected' using implants [6]. These conditions frequently require the employment of carefully planned osteotomies (i.e., sliding sagittal-split osteotomies and/or osseous genioplasty), to comprehensively correct both the occlusal and skeletal problems.…”
