Meperidine for uterine dystocia and its effect on duration of labor and neonatal acid‐base status: A randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Because of the absence of any beneficial effect of meperidine on uterine dystocia, its use in labor should be limited to pain relief in the absence of epidural analgesia.

“…Fifty‐two research publications indicated a plan to measure a dystocia‐related term(s) or reported on such terminology(ies) in the results section . Terminologies specific to the first stage of labor included failure to progress or advance , inefficient uterine action , inadequate progress in labor , ineffective labor , dysfunctional active labor , protracted active labor , prolonged active labor , prolonged deceleration phase , long 7‐cm to 10‐cm interval , and arrest of dilation/progress/labor .…”

“…In 6 studies in which pethidine was administered at a dose of 50 mg IV or IM, there were no significant adverse effects on the newborns, and no Apgar scores < 7 were found. [16][17][18][19][20][21] Only in a survey using 50 mg of IV pethidine, the Apgar score at 1 minute was 6, 22 but without complications for the newborn or admissions to the ICU. These findings demonstrate that pethidine, IM or IV, is safe during labor at this dose.…”
