Within the function of sourcing, "the process of determining how and where manufactured goods or components will be produced and obtained" (Dickerson, 1999, p. 253), Muhammad and utilized content analysis to examine 48 job postings for sourcing professionals within the apparel industry. Their findings determined that the top three areas of the daily duties were vendor management, product development, and production management. Muhammad and Ha-Brookshire (2011) introduced that product development responsibilities could extend to sourcing personnel. They also found that sourcing positions were often sought in conjunction with other responsibilities, including designing, merchandising, product development, and importing . with individual professionals, the research was not sanctioned by the firm, and participant identities remain anonymous.
Practical ImplicationsThis study can facilitate firm decisions regarding product development and inform curricular decisions in academic programs. With the findings of this study firms can devise training programs specific to the responsibilities and tasks of product developers.
