“…In prick tests 3 control persons did not react to 2 % merbromin (Hernández et al 1994). Such immediate reactions were also described in other cases (Camarasa 1976, Corrales Torres and de Corres 1985, Sanz et al 1989.…”

“…In European Countries, merbromin is still available in Belgium, Greece, and Spain, as well as in Italy. Probably for this reason most of the cases of merbromin‐induced ACD were reported from the mid‐1970s to the end of the 1990s 2,4‐8 . In all these patients patch testing results were positive to mercury in at least one of its three chemical forms (metallic mercury, organic mercury, and mercury salts), therefore suggesting that the mercurial component was responsible for merbromin sensitization.…”

“…In a study with 2776 consecutive patients, 13.2 % were positive to ethylmercury(II) chloride, 11.8 % to thimerosal, and 8.9 % to metallic mercury [119]. Hypersensitivity was also described after dermal application of mercurochrome [120,121] and in connection with mercury in tattoos [122]. However, occupational contact dermatitis from mercury is considered to be rare [20], and a positive patch test for mercury is generally without clinical consequences [115].…”
