Mercury is a type of hazardous and toxic pollutant that can result in detrimental effects on the environment and human health. This review is aimed at discussing the state-of-the-art progress on the recent developments on the toxicity of mercury and its chemical compounds. More than 210 recent works of literature are covered in this review. It first delineates the types (covering elemental mercury, inorganic mercury compounds, organic mercury compounds), structures, and sources of mercury. It then discusses the pharmacokinetic profile of mercury, molecular mechanisms of mercury toxicity, and clinical manifestation of acute and chronic mercury toxicity to public health. It also elucidates the mercury toxicity to the environment and human health in detail, covering ecotoxicity, neurotoxicity diseases, neurological diseases, genotoxicity and gene regulation, immunogenicity, pregnancy and reproductive system damage, cancer promotion, cardiotoxicity, pulmonary diseases, and renal disease. In order to mitigate the adverse effects of mercury, strategies to overcome mercury toxicity are recommended. Finally, some future perspectives are provided in order to advance this field of research in the future.

Artisanal and small‐scale gold mining (ASGM) is the principal anthropogenic activity that globally contributes to overloading our environment with mercury. Although the Minamata Convention, led by the United Nations, is a crucial instrument to eliminate its use progressively, novel approaches to accelerate this difficult transition are welcome. This article proposes a framework for policy‐making or improvement, fostering the enforcement of mercury elimination through the lens of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on the excluded artisanal and small‐scale gold miners and their dependents. We move forward with a literature review of the Artisanal and Small Mining topic, taking each SDG as a unit of analysis. Understanding the problem as a puzzle of four sets of pieces, namely: (1) social, (2) environmental, (3) economic, and (4) institutional, the paper offers potential opportunities for the decision‐makers and practitioners to accelerate the substitution of this heavy metal and develop sustainable futures for the ASGM communities. We conclude by proposing a pragmatic framework that synthesizes the means, actions, and ends to accelerate a sustainable transition.

This paper aims to explore and analyse the temporal evolution of the concept of stakeholder involvement, highlighting the transformations, influences, and interpretations that this concept has undergone over the years. The particular setting is business models for sustainability (BMfS). Through in‐depth bibliometric literature review and critical analysis, co‐citation analysis is used to identify the past themes in the topic and bibliographic coupling analysis to explore its recent developments. Future developments of the themes are then outlined. The paper proposes a conceptual framework called Sustainability Strategy Map for Stakeholder Involvement that can help organisations move towards business models for sustainability, acting on purpose, architecture and involvement to achieve outcomes. The goal is to create a detailed map of the evolution of this concept over time, highlighting crucial milestones, controversies, and connections with other key concepts. Major results show that, compared with the past, recent research is more practical, improvement‐oriented, expanded to polluting industries and focused on economic performance. Finally, stakeholder involvement shifted from management and engagement to integration, a deeper and longer connection characterised by a strategic relationship.
