Mesane Çıkım Obstruksiyonu Saptanan Obez Hastalarda Alfa Bloker Tedavisinin Etkinliği

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of alpha blocker therapy according to body mass index in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who were admitted to our outpatient clinic with symptoms of lower urinary tract symptoms between May 2015 and January 2018 and who were thought to have benign prostatic hyperplasia were evaluated retrospectively. Patients were divided into two groups as obese and non-obese. The efficacy of alpha blocker treatment was evaluated in both groups.RESULTS: A total of 371 patients, 91 obese patients (group I) and 280 non-obese patients (group II) were included in the study. At the end of the 4th and 12th weeks, we evaluated maximum urine flow rate and residual urine volume after voiding. We found that both groups benefited equally from the treatment. At the end of the 4th week, there was no change in the international prostate symptom score according to the score at admission. In group II, international prostate symptom score values decreased. At the end of the 12th week, we found that the international prostate symptom scores of both groups decreased equally compared to the scores at the time of admission. CONCLUSION: In our study, it was observed that alpha blocker treatment could be used effectively in both obese and nonobese patients.Keywords: Obesity, benign prostatic hyperplasia, alpha blocker treatment.
