Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma of the Brain with Metastasis: A Case Report with Literature Review

Abstract: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the brain is one of the rarest tumors with dismal prognosis. A 26-year-old man presented with headache, vomiting, and diplopia. On evaluation, a moderately enhancing extra-axial lesion was seen in right temporal region involving right greater wing of sphenoid, adjacent right maxillary sinus, and lateral wall of right orbit. Patient underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the spine and computed tomography (CT) of the chest for possible metastasis which showed lesion in lumbar verte… Show more

“…The list of our own and published lesions appears in Table 2. 2–99 Published cases of 4 of the listed diagnoses were not reviewed because there is a significant literature on these already (sickle cell crisis with sphenoid infarction, tuberculosis of orbital bone, sphenoid bone dysplasia in NF1, and fibrous dysplasia of bone). During the same period as these new cases were collected from our practices, 97 cases (21 males) of spheno-orbital meningioma were encountered by us.…”

“…We identified 2 cases involving the GWS. 25,26 Calcification within the mass is common, and microscopically new bone formation occurs, but this is not in a pattern of hyperostosis of the GWS, which is eroded, but within the soft tissue component of the lesion.…”

“…Clinically these tumors present with symptoms caused by increased intracranial pressure or the compression of adjacent neurological structures. Frequent symptoms include a progressive history of headache, third cranial nerve palsy, and decreased vision [12]. Due to the low incidence, the mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is often studied together with the classical chondrosarcoma.…”

“…The expression of particular markers can also help differentiate the mesenchymal and other subtypes of CS. MCS stains positive for S-100 and SOX9, like CCS [ 27 ]; however, it tends to be CD99, ezrin, and NKX2.2 positive, in contrast to CCS [ 28 , 29 ]. On the other hand, similarly to other subtypes of CS, MCS may demonstrate p53 overexpression [ 30 ].…”
