Mesomechanism of steel fiber reinforcement and toughening of reactive powder concrete

Abstract: Reactive powder concrete (RPC) is a novel cement-based composite material with ultra-high strength. Embedding a certain amount of short steel fibers in the matrixcan improve the RPC's toughness and overcome the disadvantage of high brittleness. In this paper, a number of direct uniaxial tension tests have been carried out with '8-shape' RPC200 specimens. The bond-slip process, mesoscopic structural variation and mechanical characteristics of a fiber pullout of the matrix have been investigated using the real-t… Show more

“…A phenomenon of jumpnddown in load continuously emerged within post-peak stages, accompanied by clear frequency-fixed noises (similar phenomena were found in ref. [6]). The post-peak stage of P-δ curve gradually slides down, as shown in Figure 2, except that a sudden load drop occurs at the fiber content of 1.0%.…”

“…However, the situation changes when fibers are embedded in RPC beams. Due to the effective interfacial bonds between fibers and the matrix and its function on the crack propagation [6] , the external work is mainly dissipated to pull out the fibers across the cracking path and generate new cracks at the tip of the preset notch. This brings up steady crack growth from the crack initiation through the post-peak period.…”
