Mesoporous Silica-Supported Ruthenium Oxide Nanoparticulates as Efficient Catalysts for Photoinduced Water Oxidation

Abstract: The preparation of nanoparticulate RuO 2 supported on mesoporous silica SBA-15 was optimized to achieve a uniform dispersion and confinement of RuO 2 . The supported RuO 2 (NP2) has been used as the catalyst for photoinduced water oxidation with Ru(bpy) 3 2+ as the photosensitizer and S 2 O 8 2− as the sacrificial oxidant. Both NP2 and the previously prepared NP1 achieved O 2 yields (based on S 2 O 8 2−) of 95% and 88% and overall quantum efficiencies of 11.3% and 10.0%, respectively. These benchmark numbers f… Show more

“…This nanocatalyst also displayed impressive stability and performance in a recycling test, where it proved to be capable of evolving 86−95% of the theoretical amount of O 2 over five repeating cycles. 492 Recently, the group of Wang reported on the development of a NiRuO x coated n-type Si photoanode and its application as an efficient and stable catalytic system for electrochemically driven H 2 O oxidation. 493 The NiRuO x coating, which was introduced using a sputtering technique, was found to have dual functions, where it in addition to being responsible for the catalytic activity also had a protective effect of the Si photoanode.…”

“…Noble metals oxides such as IrO 2 and RuO 2 were previously reported to act as efficient heterogeneous catalysts for light driven water oxidation ,,. Oxygen yield of more than 99 % was obtained when IrO 2 was used as WOC in the Ru(bpy) 3 2+ /Na 2 S 2 O 8 photocatalytic system .…”

“…RuO 2 supported on mesoporous silica SBA‐15 (RuO 2 NP) acted as an efficient WOC in the photocatalytic water oxidation by persulfate with [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ to afford 95 % yield of O 2 , which is much higher than that achieved with RuO 2 (27 %) and RuO 2 /Y‐zeolite‐based catalysts (31 %) . The quantum efficiency (twice of the quantum yield) was determined to be 11.3 % . RuO 2 NPs have been recycled up to five times with minimal loss of activity …”
