Mesosized Crystal-like Structure of Hexagonally Packed Hollow Hoops by Solution Self-Assembly of Diblock Copolymers

Abstract: Mesosize crystal-like aggregates with an internal structure of hexagonally packed hollow hoops (HHH) in a polystyrene matrix have been prepared in solution by self-assembly of asymmetric polystyrene-b-poly(acrylic acid) diblock copolymers. Most of the aggregates are cylindrical or in the shape of truncated cones. The external surface of the aggregates and the internal surface of the hollow hoops are lines with short poly(acrylic acid) chains. The hoop morphology is imposed because the end-capping energy of a r… Show more

“…There are no more pronounced peaks on the g(r) plots. This suggests that the cholesterol molecules both inside HDL and in the pure cluster are randomly arranged relative to each other, i.e., do not form any organized crystal-like structure [58,[60][61][62][63][64][65][66]. This observation is confirmed by the low values of the order parameter.…”

“…1 Over the past decade a number of other morphologies have been observed including stacked micelles, [2] toroids, [3] hexagonally packed hoola hoops, [4] helices [ 5 ] and branched structures. [ 6 ] Initially linear diblock copolymers were the main type of macromolecules used for these studies, however, in later investigations the toolbox of polymer selfassembly was extended to the use of dendrimers, [7] and branched [8] polymer segments as one of the blocks, but also ABA, [9] ABC, [10] and multi [11] block copolymers have been explored.…”

“…[13][14][15][16] On the contrary, crew-cut micelles represent a new type of aggregates and more complex morphologies than star-like micelles, which have received much attention in recent years. [17][18][19][20] They are formed by highly asymmetric block copolymers, where the insoluble core is bulky and has much longer chains than the soluble forming blocks. Usually, stable crew-cut aggregates can be prepared in a solvent mixture either by direct dissolution or by dissolving first the copolymer in a good solvent for both blocks and then adding the poor solvent in one of the blocks of the copolymer.…”
