“…Recent reports have shown that a large percentage (50 -70%) of patients develop distant metastases during their clinical course. 13,14 We have also observed this trend in our series of cases, in which a number of cases of mesothelioma aspirated (7 of 13 cases) were of distant metastases; in the past 2 yr, an even greater percentage of cases (7 of 11) represented distant spread.…”

“…Immunostaining with monoclonal antibody for Ber-EP4 was reported to have a positive predictive value for distinguishing adenocarcinoma from MPM of 96% and a negative predictive value of 70% [Maguir et al, 1994;King et al, 1997].…”

“…To differentiate mesothelioma from adenocarcinoma and to establish the diagnosis, three techniques have been employed: Histochemical staining with periodic acid-Schiff, immunostaining, and electron microscopy to establish the ultrastructural features of mesothelioma, including the absence of microvillus core rootlets, glycocalyceal bodies and secretory granules, the presence of intracellular desmosomes, junctional complexes, and intracytoplasmic lumina, and characteristically long and thin microvilli [Cibas et al, 1987]. Immunostaining with monoclonal antibody for Ber-EP4 was reported to have a positive predictive value for distinguishing adenocarcinoma from MPM of 96% and a negative predictive value of 70% [Maguir et al, 1994;King et al, 1997].…”
