Mesothelioma incidence and asbestos exposure in Italian national priority contaminated sites

Abstract: The relationship between office type and job satisfaction: Testing a multiple mediation model through ease of interaction and well-being by Otterbring T, Pareigis J, Wästlund E, Makrygiannis A, Lindström A Employees who work in open-plan offices reported lower levels of job satisfaction, subjective well-being, and ease of interaction with co-workers than employees who work in cellular or shared-room offices. Therefore, decision-makers should consider the impact of open office environment on employees rather th… Show more

“…Accordingly, malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other diseases of the respiratory system represented the great part of occupational compensated cases in these sites. The highest excess of occupational disease cases in the North East was observed in the site at Trieste, where excess malignant mesotheliomas, pleural and pulmonary diseases, back disorders and soft tissue diseases were observed, in the setting of a wide spectrum of industrial plants . In Central Italy, the sites at Livorno and Terni had the highest excesses of acknowledged occupational diseases.…”

“…In Central Italy, the sites at Livorno and Terni had the highest excesses of acknowledged occupational diseases. The sources of contamination (including refinery and docks activities in Livorno and a large steel industry and special landfill in Terni) do not specifically identify asbestos, but a statistical significantly excess and a geographical cluster of malignant mesotheliomas have been previously identified in these areas . In Southern Italy (including the Isles), a notable impact of occupational diseases was observed in the site of Sulcis‐Iglesiente‐Guspinese (2064 established, against 355 expected cases), where coalmines and quarries were active until the 1970s.…”

“…Recently an extensive analysis of MM incidence in Italian national priority contaminated sites (NPCSs) has been performed (18), evidencing an overall excess of 1,531 cases in these areas. It is remarkable that mesothelioma occurrence resulted higher than expected also in sites for which asbestos was not explicitly cited as contaminant in the official documents.…”

“…Exposure to asbestos other than in the occupational setting affects also the families of asbestos-workers, people living close to places where asbestos is mined or processed, and the populations exposed to the fragmentation of asbestos artefacts (10)(11)(12)(13).…”
