Meta‐analysis and review on the changes of tear function and corneal sensitivity in diabetic patients

Abstract: ABSTRACT.To perform a comprehensive evaluation and comparison of tear function in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Research related to tear function in diabetic and non-diabetic patients was gathered using PubMed, EBSCO, OVID. Two reviewers independently conducted the literature search. The quality assessment and the data extraction were performed in accordance with exclusion criteria and cross-checking. RevMan 5.1.7 software was used for the meta-analysis. The tear film break-up time was studied in eight a… Show more

“…In previously published reports, the conclusions regarding TBUT, Schirmer, or other parameters in patients with DM are controversial. Some studies suggested no difference [3436], and others demonstrated a decreased TBUT and Schirmer [37, 38]. Our study demonstrated a nonstatistically significant increase in dry eye signs.…”

“…35 It is possible that preexisting diabetes is related to DED, because diabetes mellitus is often accompanied by DED. 36 These relationships imply that controlling blood sugar levels before HSCT would be helpful in decreasing the risk of ocular GVHD. Further, one of the novel findings in our study was that the severity of ocular GVHD was relatively static from the initial diagnosis, suggesting that earlier detection of ocular GVHD may prevent a more severe manifestation.…”

“…Recently, tear function and corneal sensitivity in diabetic patients have been reported. (Lv et al 2014) The relationship between tear function or stability and corneal sensitivity in dry eye disease is of interest and should be clarified in future studies. Although the actual mechanism of the regulating system is unclear (Yuan et al 2010), future investigation of the capability of reflex tearing would be helpful in point of the diagnosis and management of dye eye.…”
