Meta-Analysis of the Significance of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria in Diabetes

Abstract: OBJECTIVETo evaluate whether asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) is more common in patients with diabetes than among control subjects. In addition, we wanted to clarify the clinical significance of ASB in patients with diabetes.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSWe conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published data since 1966. Twenty-two studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria of the meta-analysis.RESULTSASB was present in 439 of 3,579 (12.2%) patients with diabetes and in 121 of 2,702 (4.5%) healthy contro… Show more

“…This is consistent with the literature regarding UTI in diabetic patients in general. Within the general population, diabetic patients have a 1.5-4 times increased incidence of bacteriuria compared to non-diabetic patients [29]. For instance, a study done by Hirji et al [30] noted that the incidence of UTI was 46.9 per 1000 person-years among diabetic patients and 29.6 for non-diabetic patients.…”

“…In a previous meta-analysis, Renko et al [1] reported an increased prevalence of albuminuria in diabetic patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria as compared to those without (OR: 2.9, 95% CI: 1.7–4.8). Only three observational studies (871 participants) were included in their analysis, all of which evaluated women [4,11,12].…”

“…Bacteriuria is present in 12.2% of patients with diabetes [1], reaching a prevalence rate of 30% in diabetic women [2]. It has been recommended that urinary albumin be measured in sterile urine for the proper diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy [3].…”
