Metabolic impact of the VDR rs1544410 in diabetic retinopathy

Abstract: Aims To investigate the association between BsmI and DM2 in patients with and without DR and to correlate with clinical parameters in a population in northeastern Brazil. Methods Cross-sectional case-control study in which data were collected from 285 individuals, including 128 patients with DM2 and 157 with DR. Clinical, biochemical and anthropometric parameters were analyzed, in addition to the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) BsmI of the VDR gene (rs1544410), genotyped by PCR-RFLP. Results In the DR… Show more

“…We found in the studied population that the polymorphisms rs1544410 ( Bsm I) and rs2228570 ( Fok I) were associated with the severe form of the disease and increased the rate of SOM occurrence. Other diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, COVID‐19, diabetic complications, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus, among others, have already been related to polymorphisms in the VDR gene (Apaydin et al 2022; Assis et al, 2022; Zhang, Lu, et al, 2020).…”

“…systemic lupus erythematosus, among others, have already been related to polymorphisms in the VDR gene(Apaydin et al 2022;Assis et al, 2022;Zhang, Lu, et al, 2020).The human VDR gene is located on chromosome 12q12-q14 and comprises 11 exons and 11 introns. Polymorphisms named BsmI, FokI and TaqI are related to the enzyme that recognises the restriction site TA B L E 3 Genotypic and allelic frequencies, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium of polymorphisms in VDR gene in oncopaediatric patients with or without oral mucositis (n = 102) Abbreviations: n, absolute frequency; %, percentage frequency; −, missing value; HWE, Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium.…”

The danger of T2DM is significantly reduced by vitamin D, a benefit that is probably mediated by the vitamin's effects on beta cell activity, insulin sensitivity, and inflammation throughout the body (4)(5)(6). Its development appears to be influenced by a number of variables, including genetic, dietary, environmental, and lifestyle factors.…”
