Metabolic Signatures of Exercise in Human Plasma

Abstract: Exercise provides numerous salutary effects, but our understanding of how these occur is limited. To gain a clearer picture of exercise-induced metabolic responses, we have developed comprehensive plasma metabolite signatures by using mass spectrometry to measure over 200 metabolites before and after exercise. We identified plasma indicators of glycogenolysis (glucose-6-phosphate), tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle span 2 expansion (succinate, malate, and * To whom correspondence should be addressed Corresponding… Show more

“…A wide range of metabolites present in plasma and serum has been determined using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry and/or gas-chromatography mass spectrometry collected pre-and post-exercise. In most cases, a wide range of metabolites have been reported (Pohjanen et al 2007, Lewis et al 2010, Peake et al 2014 to exist and that with exercise changes in metabolites related to carbohydrate, triglyceride and markers of the tricarboxylic acid have been reported. Peake et al (2014), these studies were not hypothesis driven and are more observational in nature.…”

“…Emerging metabolite profiling technologies have now enabled comprehensive analyses of metabolic intermediates in body fluids and allow detailed investigation of complex plasma metabolite changes during exercise and recovery [12,13]. In addition, whole genome expression analyses have elucidated the global transcriptional response of human muscle to exercise [14,15], but the impact of diabetes on exerciseregulated genes is unclear.…”
