Metabolic Syndrome Characteristics in Gout Patients

Abstract: Gout is commonly associated with obesity, arterial hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. However, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome has not been widely recognized in patients with gout. We studied 41 patients (37 males) with primary gout to assess the prevalence and characteristics of the associated metabolic syndrome. Twenty-one patients with gout (51%) showed >or=3 criteria for the metabolic syndrome. Pathological conditions associated were obesity (21/41), high blood pressure (30/41), dyslipidemia (3… Show more

“…Pathological change can be prevented with allopurinol, a uric acid lowering drug 14 . In humans, hyperuricaemia is associated with the metabolic syndrome and all the individual components of the metabolic syndrome 15–17 . Hyperuricaemia is also an independent risk factor for renal disease, myocardial infarction and stroke 18,19 .…”

[15][16][17] Hyperuricaemia is also an independent risk factor for renal disease, myocardial infarction and stroke. 18,19 The observations in animals, along with the epidemiological evidence from humans, implicate hyperuricaemia as a potentially significant contributor to vascular and cardiovascular disease.…”
