Metabolic Syndrome Increases the Risk for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Meta‐Analysis

Abstract: Background. Studies revealed that metabolic factors might contribute substantially to osteoarthritis (OA) pathogenesis. There has been an increasing interest to understand the relationship between knee OA and the metabolic syndrome (MetS). The purpose of this study was to explore the association between metabolic syndrome and knee osteoarthritis using meta-analysis. Methods. Databases, including PUBMED, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library, were searched to get relevant studies. Data were extracted separately by t… Show more

“…Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is one of the worldwide major causes of functional disability in the joints attacking approximately 30% of the older population aged over 60 1‐3 . KOA is predominantly a disease of the knee joint degeneration, which is pathogenetically presented as cartilage bone damage accompanied with hyperostosis, cystic change of the cartilage, edema in the synovial tissue and so on 4‐7 . The patients' life quality is seriously injured by KOA with consistent pain from morning to night, knee pain in daily activities, and the most severe condition‐disability, which result in a situation that requires early diagnosis and prompt intervention of KOA.…”

“…Furthermore, Abourazzak FE et al demonstrated a significant association between individual metabolic factors and pain and functional impairment in KOA Moroccan women [17]. They found that diabetes, dyslipidemia and hyperten- Osteoarthritis and the metabolic syndrome have both a relation with a number of mediators induced by proinflammatory cytokines, like oxidative stress agents, oxidized low-density lipoproteins, adipokines, proinflammatory lipid mediators and nitric oxide [22,23]. The acceleration of aging and cell senescence can be due to chronic low grade inflammation, leading to oxidative stress.…”
