Metabolism and Chronic Inflammation: The Links Between Chronic Heart Failure and Comorbidities

Abstract: Heart failure (HF) patients often suffer from multiple comorbidities, such as diabetes, atrial fibrillation, depression, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic kidney disease. The coexistance of comorbidities usually leads to multi morbidity and poor prognosis. Treatments for HF patients with multi morbidity are still an unmet clinical need, and finding an effective therapy strategy is of great value. HF can lead to comorbidity, and in return, comorbidity may promote the progression of HF, creating… Show more

“…As a result of the metabolism, several conditions, such as infections, stress, inflammation exposure, radiation, and smoke, produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). When the endogenous antioxidant system or the intake of exogenous antioxidants is insufficient, these molecules can lead to irreversible cell damage and are associated with various diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, CVD, cataracts, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer [33][34][35][36]. Several antioxidants can help to prevent the impact of the aging process.…”

“…Эта ассоциация указывает на существование общих патофизиологических процессов. В механизмах типовых патологических процессов важную роль играет хроническое воспаление, которое может являться связующим звеном между СН и сопутствующими заболеваниями [3].…”

“…It has been clarified that cytokines and metabolites can be released at malnourished status. Systemic inflammation can activate immune cell transdifferentiation into pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic subsets, leading to cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis ( 8 ). For instance, TNF-β as one of the most important inflammatory cytokines increased significantly in patients with malnutrition and its increase resulted in potential negative inotropic effects, worsening ventricular functions, and eventually progressing to heart failure ( 9 ).…”
