“…Early estimates of daily GPP and CR in Chicamo stream made by the one station‐open system method (Suárez & Vidal‐Abarca, 2000) were lower than our estimates made using the chamber method, because the former only reflects a particular local community. The chamber method employed in our study provides a better estimate of stream metabolism because the contribution of the different algal assemblages present is recorded and can be extrapolated to the total reach.…”

“…To our knowledge, there are few data on primary production in Mediterranean streams. Four streams in the Spanish Mediterranean area have been studied: La Solana and Riera Major, in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula with 800–1000 mm mean annual precipitation (Guasch & Sabater, 1994, 1998); Montesina stream, in the south (Mollá, Malchik & Casado, 1994) with 527 mm of mean annual precipitation; and Chicamo stream (Suárez & Vidal‐Abarca, 2000), located in southeastern Spain, with a semiarid climate (250 mm mean annual precipitation). Early estimates of primary production and respiration in Chicamo stream (Suárez & Vidal‐Abarca, 2000) were higher than those reported in the other Mediterranean streams of wetter areas, but were similar to those obtained in the warm desert stream, Sycamore Creek (Busch & Fisher, 1981; Grimm & Fisher (1984).…”

“…Molla et al (1994) ) for periphyton communities, using dial oxygen curve method. Our estimates of GPP and CR are most similar to the results obtained by Sua´rez and Vidal-Abarca (2000) for whole periphyton communities by using diurnal oxygen change method (range 0.24-10.7 for GPP and 0.26-7. 2 .day x1 ) using recirculatory chambers.…”

“…More recently, research has focused on natural saline streams in semiarid southern Spain. These studies highlighted the ecological and biogeographical interests in terms of physico-chemical features (Martínez et al 1998;Moreno et al 1995;Vidal-Abarca et al 2001, 2002, primary production (Suárez and Vidal-Abarca 2000;Velasco et al 2003;Gutiérrez-Cánovas et al 2009), secondary production (Barahona et al 2005;Perán et al 1999), invertebrate taxa (Gallardo-Mayenco 1994; Moreno et al 1997Moreno et al , 2004Ribera 2000;Velasco et al 2006), aquatic flora (Aboal 1986(Aboal , 1988Aboal and Fletcher 1996;Moreno et al 2001), the effects of floods on macroinvertebrate communities (Ortega et al 1991), their conservation value (Gómez et al 2005) and the genetics of endangered aquatic coleoptera . The present study is the first that quantifies the seasonal dynamics of a natural saline stream through the analysis of macroinvertebrate community structure.…”
