Metabolism of collagen is altered in hypertensives with increased intima media thickness

Abstract: We suggest that the collagenase-anticollagenase system is abnormal in essential hypertension and contributes to cardiovascular remodeling. Increased IMT may be related to the accumulation of extracellular proteins due to altered metabolism of collagen.

“…Reduced nitric oxide (NO) production and bioavailability and increased sympathetic activity and reduced conversion of thyroxine to triiodothyronine in the GHD state can contribute to changes in microcirculation, which can be combated by replacement [31]. The known effects of rhGH on collagen metabolism may also in part contribute to the significant lowering of APWV in this present study [32] since the sum of procollagen type I carboxy-terminal propeptide and carboxy-terminal telopeptide is significantly greater in untreated essential hypertensives [33].…”

“…There have been many studies in humans evaluating the levels of MMPs and ADAMs in the systemic circulation during hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy, as well as heart failure [84,109,110,111,112,113,114,115,116,117,118,119,120,121,122,123,124,125,126,127,128,129,130]. A meta-analysis of these studies concluded that elevation of MMP-2 and MMP-9 can be used as plasma biomarkers for cardiovascular remodeling in hypertension [131].…”

“…Collagen fractions in the extracellular matrix are intimately involved in the atherosclerotic process and the vascular remodeling that occurs in CV disease [89]. There is evidence that altered collagen metabolism (eg, elevated serum levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1) is associated with hypertension [89], and that plasma markers of collagen metabolism are positively correlated with arterial stiffness measured by PWV in hypertensive patients with LV hypertrophy [90].…”
