“…3/3HSD is found not only in classical steroidogenic tissues, namely the placenta (1, 3), adrenal cortex (4-6), ovary (2, 6-11), and testis (2,6,8,12), but also in several peripheral tissues, including the skin (2,(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19), adipose tissue (2), breast (2,12,20), lung (21), endometrium (22), prostate (23,24), liver (2,8,25), kidney (2,8), epididymis (8), and brain (26). The widespread distribution of 3/3HSD expression indicates that this enzyme is likely to play an important role in the intracrine (27) formation of sex steroids in peripheral target tissues.…”

“…The conversion of T to DHT in neural tissue is important in the developing brain and in androgen feedback, 43,81 and 5α-reduced androgens in the developing ovarian follicle may be important in regulating estrogen formation. 82 Other tissues in which 5α-reductase activity has been demonstrated include lung, 83 platelets, 84 and lymphocytes, 85 where the biologic significance of this transforma tion is less obvious.…”

“…A key enzyme in the regulation is 3 -hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/isomerase (3 -HSD) (Conley & Bird 1997), which catalyses the conversion of 5 -3 -hydroxysteroids to 4 -3-ketosteroids, a reaction that is essential for the biosynthesis of all active steroid hormones. In mammals 3 -HSD is expressed not only in classical steroid-producing organs (Penning 1997), but also in several peripheral tissues, including the skin (Dumont et al 1992), breast (Zhao et al 1991), lung (Milewich et al 1977), endometrium (Bonney et al 1985), prostate (ElAlfy et al 1999), liver (Zhao et al 1990(Zhao et al , 1991, kidney (Bain et al 1991) and brain (Ukena et al 1999). To our knowledge, no studies have been published that relate to the expression of 3 -HSD in the pituitary.…”
