Abstract:Summary. The a-anomers of D-glucose and D-mannose stimulate insulin release more efficiently than the corresponding 0-anomers. This coincides with higher glycolytic and oxidative fluxes in pancreatic islets exposed to a-than to 0-anomers. This situation may be attributable, in the case of a-D-glucose, not solely to the a-stereospecificity of phosphoglucose isomerase but also to that of phosphoglucomutase resulting in a higher islet content of glucose-1,6-bisphosphate, an activator of phosphofructokinase. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
