Metabolites, Nutritional Quality and Antioxidant Activity of Red Radish Roots Affected by Gamma Rays

Abstract: Radish is a root vegetable of the Brassicaceae family that is grown and eaten all over the world. It is often consumed raw as a crisp salad vegetable with a strong flavor. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the stimulating effect of different γ-rays dose levels (0.0, 10, 20, 40, and 80 Gy) on the quality properties of radish,in addition toits nutritional elements, as well as some of the metabolites found in the red radish roots. The results indicated that the irradiated seeds showed a high germination rate… Show more

“…Parvin et al [ 25 ] suggested that foliar spraying of irradiated sodium alginate at certain concentrations showed a marked effect on the height of plants and the number of leaves, as well as causes an increase in the biochemical and physiological functions of the spinach plant. Furthermore, protein degradation and recycling are essential responses of plants to stress, since the breakdown of proteins generates free amino acids needed for the de novo synthesis of new proteins [ 56 ].

“…The low doses of gamma radiation showed improvement in roost and shoots length in mung bean ( Vigna radiate ) and pea ( Pisum sativum ) compared to the control (Atteh and Adeyeye 2022 ). In addition, gamma-rays showed high germination percentage and stimulate vegetative traits as plant height, leave numbers/plant, roots length and roots diameter (El-Beltagi et al 2022 ). The same trend was found in red radish ( Raphanus sativus -Red) blackberry ( Rubus fruticosus ), cowpea ( Vigna unguiculata ) and culantro ( Eryngium foetidum ) which were exposed to low doses of gamma-rays, respectively (Aly et al 2023a , 2022 ; El-Beltagi et al 2013 ; Aly 2010 ).…”

“…Gamma-rays are identified as affecting plant growth and causing cytological, genetically, physiologically, morphologically, and biochemical alterations in the plant tissues, these alterations depend on the dose intensity low or high (El-Beltagi et al 2022 ; Aly et al 2021a ; Aly et al 2019a , b ).…”

“…Subsequently, the digested leaf samples from different radish genotypes were analyzed using a Flame photometer (Jenway PFP-7, UK) to measure the concentrations of Na + and K + . To ensure accurate quantification, a standard curve was created using a series of graded standards (ranging from 10 to 100 mg L -1 ) of Na + and K + (Ayyub et al, 2016;El-Beltagi et al, 2022).…”
