Metabolomic Profiling of Bos taurus Beef, Dairy, and Crossbred Cattle: A Between-Breeds Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Cattle breeds may differ substantially in their metabolism. However, the metabolomes of dairy and beef cattle are not well-known. Knowledge of breed-specific metabolic features is essential for biomarker identification and to adopt specific nutritional strategies. The muscle hypertrophy (mh), a beef cattle phenotype present in Asturiana de los Valles (AV) but absent in Asturiana de la Montaña (AM) and Holsteins, may underlie such differences. We compared the plasma metabolomes of Holstein, AV, AM, and crossbr… Show more

“…Embryos were transferred to recipient heifers from Asturiana de los Valles (1.74 years), Holstein (1.84 years), and their crosses (1.76 years), in the experimental herd. Recipient traits, feeding, nutrition, management and ET procedures were described in detail [ 78 , 85 ]. Briefly, recipients were synchronized in estrus with an intravaginal progestogen device (PRID Alpha; CEVA, Barcelona, Spain) for 8–11 days, followed by a prostaglandin F 2 α analogue (Dynolitic, Pfizer, Madrid, Spain) injected 48 h before progestogen removal.…”

“…Connected to tyrosine metabolism via pathway analysis, acetoacetic acid was detected in the rumen fluid of carrot-fed lambs and is a product of tyrosine degradation 97 , resulting in a ketone body that completes the tyrosine degradation pathway via its influence on fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase 98 . Similarly, 3-methyl-2-oxovaleric acid, a product of isoleucine metabolism 99 was also greater in the rumen fluid of carrot-fed lambs and was negatively correlated with the unclassified Bacteroidales . This suggests a possible route of utilisation for Bacteroidales , as the taxa does not secrete 3-methyl-2-oxovaleric acid and has previously been associated with branched chain amino acid metabolism 100 , 101 .…”

“…However, we believe this is the first study investigating its impacts on the number and strength of correlations with metabolites. Other studies have investigated associations between cattle metabolome and live weight (Sikka et al, 1994 ), growth rate and feed efficiency (Ogunade & McCoun, 2020 ) and reproductive performance amongst cattle breeds (Gómez et al, 2020 ). However, animal assessments to be correlated with the metabolites’ abundance in these studies were mostly recorded at a single point in time during the whole trial period or the beginning and the end of the study and then values were averaged.…”
