Metabolomics facilitate the personalized management in inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic relapsing inflammation and mucosal lesions. Reliable biomarkers for monitoring disease activity, predicting therapeutic response, and disease relapse are needed in the personalized management of IBD. Given the alterations in metabolomic profiles observed in patients with IBD, metabolomics, a new and developing technique for the qualitative and quantitative study of small metabolite molecules, offers another possibility for… Show more

“…Among the separation techniques, gas chromatography (GC), 31 liquid chromatography (LC), 36 ultra high‐pressure liquid chromatography (UPLC), 37 and selective ion flow tube mass spectroscopy (SIFT‐MS) 38 are most commonly used. Both NMR spectroscopy and MS coupled with chromatography are high‐throughput techniques that have their advantages and limitations 39 …”

“…Both NMR spectroscopy and MS coupled with chromatography are high-throughput techniques that have their advantages and limitations. 39 In 2001, a consortium for metabonomic toxicity started working on generating databases of 1 H-NMR spectra of body fluids from animal models, involving pharmaceutical corporations such as the Standard Metabolic Reporting Structure initiative (SMRS), Architecture for Metabolomics (ArMet), and Metabolomics Standards Initiative (MSI). MSI aims to provide a common mechanism for describing the work so that the data can be made available to others for evaluation or to support an extension and also to avoid duplication and define common standards in a public repository.…”

“…Metabolomics is a technique with advantages of high throughput, satisfactory sensitivity and accuracy for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of small molecule metabolites from biological samples including serum, plasma, urine, feces, breath and biopsy samples, which can not only achieve the quantification of change in a single metabolite but also integrate the changes of multiple metabolites through multivariate analysis to gain a holistic comprehension of metabolic profile ( 47 ). In view of heterogeneity, complex etiology and easy recurrence of IBD, metabolomics has bounced into IBD in recent years for assessing disease activity, elucidating the underlying mechanisms, predicting the therapeutic response, and monitoring the disease relapse ( 47 , 48 ). In this study, untargeted metabolomics analysis of serum was conducted in each group to clarify the mechanism of CA on experimental colitis.…”

“…Therefore, the outcomes are likely related to high energy demand in post-surgery recovery. It is noteworthy that metabolomics can be used for predicting the therapeutic response in IBD [24]. However, the observed alterations in the metabolome may depend on the type of therapy.…”

“…However, the observed alterations in the metabolome may depend on the type of therapy. Thus far, the application of anti-tumor necrosis factor, vedolizumab, Infliximab, exclusive enteral nutrition, and fecal microbiota transplantation has been widely investigated [24]. For the follow-up study, more different types of samples should be collected (plasma, urine, feces) at more time points to widely verify the current observations and evaluate long-time outcomes of ileo-colic region resection.…”
