Metabolomics Study of Different Germplasm Resources for Three Polygonatum Species Using UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS

Abstract: Rhizomes of the Polygonatum species are well-known in traditional Chinese medicine. The 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia includes three different species that possess different pharmacological effects. Due to the lack of standardized discriminant compounds there has often been inadvertently incorrect prescriptions given for these medicines, resulting in serious consequences. Therefore, it is critical to accurately distinguish these herbal Polygonatum species. For this study, UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS based metabol… Show more

“…The level of weight loss, rotting rate and TSS was highest in the CK group and approximately twofold higher than the ozone treatment group. However, the other indicators of SOD, POD, firmness were higher in the ozone treatment, this result is consistent with previous literature reports ( Wang et al., 2022 ). These results suggest a relationship between ozone treatment and traits, ozone can significantly affect the parameters of cherry.…”

“…[ 21 ]. Although researchers have reported many metabolic components in Polygonatum species, previous studies have focused on only a few metabolites, such as polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids [ 9 , 10 ]. The metabolite differences in rhizomes among different germplasms and different age sections of P. cyrtonema have not yet been studied in depth.…”

“…Related studies have suggested that differences in the metabolic composition between varieties of the same species may result in species with different qualities and characteristics [ 7 , 8 ]. Some variation in the medicinal composition of Polygonatum species from different germplasms has been reported [ 9 , 10 ], and significant differences in the medicinal composition of Polygonatum species from the same germplasms have been found among different age sections and varying cultivation environments [ 11 ]. In recent years, the contents of total polysaccharides, total saponins, and some medicinal components, such as total flavonoids, have primarily been used as criteria to evaluate the quality of germplasms and age sections of Polygonatum species.…”

“…Metabolomics is a method for the comprehensive qualitative and quantitative examination of all metabolites in a biological system under predetermined conditions, 18 which can be used to analyse all small molecular metabolites in plants with different species, genotypes, and ecological types and to identify differences between samples 19 . At present, plant metabolomic is mainly applied for the quality control links of TCMs, such as source identification, 20 authenticity identification, 21 and processing method evaluation 22 . In addition, plant metabolomics is a well‐established research field in the large‐scale phytochemical analysis of TCMs, which is utilised for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of all ingredients derived from multiple plants 23 .…”
