Metachronous Coexistence of Laryngeal Pseudolymphoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: An unreported case of metachronous coexistence of laryngeal pseudolymphoma and squamous cell carcinoma is described. The long follow-up of the patient (above 11 years), without any evidence of lymphoreticular disease elsewhere, was in favor of a diagnosis of lymphoid hyperplasia of the larynx. The occurrence in the same organ of a squamous cell carcinoma has allowed the thorough investigation of the reactive lesion. The additional cases of laryngeal pseudolymphoma reported in the English literature are reviewe… Show more

“…The stimulated squamous epithelium may then have led to squamous cell carcinoma. The present case suggests that MALT-type lymphoma of the larynx can coexist with squamous cell carcinoma, as previously reported by Ferlito et al (1984). Although pseudolymphoma was previously considered as benign, it is now classified as MALT-type lymphoma which is a low-grade malignancy.…”

“…MALT-type lymphoma was first described by Isaacson and Wright (1983) in the gastrointestinal tract and subsequently reported by Diebold et al (1990) in the larynx. The term 'pseudolymphoma' had previously been used by several authors (Salkeld, 1955;Climie et al, 1964;Mabry, 1967;Al-Saleem et al, 1970;Pellettiere et al, 1980;Ferlito et al, 1984) for such tumours, until they were classified as MALT-type lymphomas (Isaacson and Spencer, 1987;Diebold et al, 1990). This type of lymphoma is characterized by the proliferation of centrocytelike and lymphoplasmacytic cells, and the presence of lymphoepithelial lesions and germinal centres Isaacson and Spencer, 1987;Isaacson, 1992).…”

“…A similar case was reported in 1994 by Nageris et al, 25 who described a rare case of f ibrosarcoma of the vocal cord extending into and obliterating the paralaryngeal space, following radiotherapy for a glottic squamous cell carcinoma. In 1984, Ferlito et al 19 reported a metachronous coexistence of laryn- geal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma (of a low grade of malignancy) and squamous cell carcinoma, with the term "pseudolympho- An apparent association of epithelial and mesenchymal neoplasms of the larynx is not always confirmed on closer scrutiny; for example, it is important to distinguish solitary tumors manifesting bidirectional or multidirectional differentiation from true synchronous primary cancers of the larynx originating from 2 discrete, different malignant clones. The 3 cases described in the literature of squamous cell carcinoma and rhabdomyosarcoma of the larynx were all synchronous.…”
