An extensive literature base worldwide demonstrates how spatial differences in estuarine fish assemblages are related to those in the environment at (bio)regional, estuary-wide or local (withinestuary) scales. Few studies, however, have examined all three scales, and those including more than one have often focused at the level of individual environmental variables rather than scales as a whole. This study has identified those spatial scales of environmental differences, across regional, estuary-wide and local levels, that are most important in structuring ichthyofaunal composition throughout south-western Australian estuaries. It is the first to adopt this approach for temperate microtidal waters. To achieve this, we have employed a novel approach to the BIOENV routine in PRIMER v6 and a modified global BEST test in an alpha version of PRIMER v7. A combination of all three scales best matched the pattern of ichthyofaunal differences across the study area (ρ = 0.59; P = 0.001), with estuary-wide and regional scales accounting for about twice the variability of local scales. A shade plot analysis showed these broader-scale ichthyofaunal differences were driven by a greater diversity of marine and estuarine species in the permanently-open west coast estuaries and higher numbers of several small estuarine species in the periodically-open south coast estuaries. When interaction effects were explored, strong but contrasting influences of local environmental scales were revealed within each region and estuary type. A quantitative decision tree for predicting the fish fauna at any nearshore estuarine site in south-western Australia has also been produced. The estuarine management implications of the above findings are highlighted.

Aim This study aimed to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton in the Peri Lagoon, a coastal freshwater lagoon in Brazil. Methods Ichthyoplankton samples were collected every two months from June 2008 to April 2010 with 500 µm conical-cylindrical planktonic nets at five sampling stations. Results In total, 181 fish eggs and 1,315 larvae, representing estuarine and freshwater species, were captured. The most representative species were Awaous tajasica, Ctenogobius sp1, and Platanichthys platana. Significant differences were found in temporal egg distribution and larval spatiotemporal distribution (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.05). Eggs were predominantly captured during the autumn, winter, and spring Neotropical seasons. Geospatial analysis demonstrated spatial segregation in the distribution of larval assemblages, with higher abundances in areas adjacent to riparian forests, following stream mouths, and deeper areas with rocky substrates. Conclusions Proximity to streams and areas surrounded by dense forests is crucial for the spawning and development of fish species in the Peri Lagoon. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the conservation of the ichthyofauna in this unique environment.

“…Se ha observado que las variables ambientales a gran escala parecen predecir los procesos ecológicos de mejor manera que las condiciones locales, tanto en peces como en otros organismos (Alonso-Aller et al, 2014;Hallett et al, 2004;Hoeinghaus et al, 2007;Valesini et al, 2014). Particularmente para lagunas salobres del Atlántico mexicano, Sanvicente et al (2011) evaluaron la contribución relativa de los procesos regionales y locales sobre la estructura de comunidades de larvas de peces, observando que los procesos regionales tuvieron una influencia significativa sobre la composición de especies, mientras que las características ambientales locales no se asociaron significativamente. Asimismo, la consideración de temperatura atmosférica y precipitación máximas, permitió una mayor explicación de la variabilidad de la abundancia, debido a que son regularmente las condiciones extremas (máximos y mínimos de las variables ambientales) las que tienden a regular la abundancia de las especies, más que las condiciones medias del ambiente (Begon et al, 2006).…”

El objetivo del estudio es analizar los patrones temporales en la distribución de Beloniformes en un estuario intermitente tropical. Durante 19 meses se realizaron muestreos en ciclos de 24 h cada mes, tomando muestras cada 2 horas (442 muestreos en total). Simultáneamente, se registraron in situ variables abióticas y bióticas, así como variables con registros histórico-regionales. Se capturaron 6 especies, de las cuales Strongylura notata notata mostró un pulso significativo en mayo-agosto, mientras que S. timucu, Hyporhamphus unifasciatus e H. meeki mostraron pulsos significativos en febrero-abril y diciembre (Permanova, p < 0.04). De acuerdo con las correlaciones inter-set de un análisis de correspondencia canónica, la presencia estacional de S. notata notata estuvo principalmente determinada por días largos, altas temperaturas atmosféricas y precipitaciones, mientras que S. timucu e H. unifasciatus se relacionaron con el fitoplancton y zooplancton. Solo S. notata notata presentó diferencias significativas a nivel nictémero (Permanova, p < 0.0005). Las variables histórico-regionales mostraron mayor influencia sobre los patrones de distribución de las especies, que las variables in situ. Un muestreo intensivo permitió conocer de forma más completa las condiciones que determinan los patrones de migración, lo cual contribuye a la conservación y manejo de estas especies.
