Metagenomic Analysis of Urban Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents in Tokyo

Abstract: Urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, even with proper treatment, may cause antimicrobial resistance (AMR) burden, with a high frequency of acquired antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). The dissemination of ARGs into the environment increases the risk of infectious diseases; however, there is little direct evidence regarding their epidemiological effects. This study aimed to assess effluents from urban WWTPs around the Tama River and Tokyo Bay using metagenomic analysis of (AMR) genes (ARGs) and… Show more

“…This suggests that the current spread of MRSA in Japan is not limited to medical institutions, but may be widespread throughout the city as already mentioned [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Although the degree of pollutant loading from hospital effluent to STP influent varies greatly from region to region and country to country [ 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 ], our results support the need for further conclusive research by taking regional customs, bias, and unknown factors into consideration. In addition, due to the presence of a wide variety of live microorganisms in activated sludge in the biological treatment reactors at STPs [ 79 ], there have been concerns that AMRB could result in a pool of AMRB through zygotic transmission or transformation [ 80 , 81 , 82 ].…”

“…The E. coli ST131 isolate from clams was MDR and had genomic features of clade C of the pandemic E. coli ST131 lineage (Denamur et al, 2021), which is the most prevalent ExPEC clonal group isolated in extra-intestinal infections in humans (Nicolas-Chanoine et al, 2014). The ST131 clone has previously been reported in water environments (Colomer-Lluch et al, 2013;Nicolas-Chanoine et al, 2014;Jørgensen et al, 2017), influent (Nicolas-Chanoine et al, 2014Jørgensen et al, 2017), effluent treated wastewaters of water treatment plants (Zhi et al, 2020;Sekizuka et al, 2022), and bivalves (Vignaroli et al, 2016;Bueris et al, 2022;Sola et al, 2022). The ST457 is a broad host range, globally disseminated diverse E. coli lineage that can cause human extra-intestinal disease (Nesporova et al, 2021).…”

“…Sewage effluent samples were collected from eight WWTP sites along the Tama River, Tokyo Bay, and the recreational beach area (BEC1) [ 14 ]. EPB and CPB from fresh 50-mL samples of each effluent ( Figure 1 ).…”
