Metagenomic insights into the taxonomy, function, and dysbiosis of prokaryotic communities in octocorals

Abstract: Background In octocorals (Cnidaria Octocorallia), the functional relationship between host health and its symbiotic consortium has yet to be determined. Here, we employed comparative metagenomics to uncover the distinct functional and phylogenetic features of the microbiomes of healthy Eunicella gazella, Eunicella verrucosa, and Leptogorgia sarmentosa tissues, in contrast with the microbiomes found in seawater and sediments. We further explored how the octocoral microbiome shifts to a pathobiom… Show more

“…Functions that potentially have a role in host-microbe interactions, such as proteins containing eukaryote-like domains involved in host-symbiont recognition ( 11 , 64 , 65 ), secretion systems potentially important for host colonization, and biosynthetic gene clusters encoding secondary metabolites were investigated across the isolates ( Fig. 4b ).…”

“…strain G2_01 from Acropora cytherea , closely followed by the octocoral associate Aquimarina megaterium EL33 (class Flavobacteria ) (1,208 repeats). Endozoicomonas montiporae strain CL-33 displayed the highest number of domains related to antiviral defense mechanisms, such as CRISPR proteins and endonucleases, which are known to be enriched in the microbiomes of marine sponges ( 65 , 70 ) and healthy octocorals ( 11 ). Further, 49 out of the 74 genomes assessed harbored the TauD (PF02668) gene.…”

“…This suggests that the native microbiota of these species may provide some beneficial functions for the acclimation to elevated seawater temperatures. To further investigate which microbial functions may contribute to a gorgonian holobiont’s acclimation potential and which microbes are involved as well as the implications of the observed stochastic changes on holobiont functioning, future studies would benefit from functional analyses of the microbiota, including metatranscriptomics in combination with metagenomics analyses ( 53 ).…”
