Metal-based carboxamide-derived compounds endowed with antibacterial and antifungal activity

Abstract: A series of three bioactive thiourea (carboxamide) derivatives, N-(dipropylcarbamothioyl)-and their cobalt(II), copper(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II) complexes (1)- (12) have been synthesized and characterized by their IR, 1 H-NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis data. The Crystal structure of one of the ligand, N-(dipropylcarbamothioyl)thiophene-2-carboxamide (L 1 ) and its nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes were determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. All the ligands and m… Show more

“…Zinc supplementation has a significant effect on growth and body weight gain in children and results in decreased child mortality. 2 Zinc coordination compounds have been successfully tested for treatment of diabetes 3 whilst other papers report their excellent antibacterial, 4,5 antifungal, 5,6 anti-inflammatory, 7 and antioxidant 8 activities, including their use as antitumor antibiotics 9 and antihypertensive drug. 10 Most studies indicate that zinc coordination compounds exhibit greater antimicrobial activity than the parent ligands.…”

“…10 Most studies indicate that zinc coordination compounds exhibit greater antimicrobial activity than the parent ligands. 5,6 Zinc carboxylates containing Lewis bases as ligands have been studied in last two decades especially because of their structural properties, different geometry, coordination propensity and spectroscopic properties. Zinc coordination compounds with carboxylate ligands are important as building modes for metal organic frameworks (MOFs), [11][12][13][14][15] i.e.…”

“…The highest achieved fungicidal activity was for the 4-methylthiophene derivative which approached 70% inhibition of M. canis for all metal complexes. 209 Similarly, the 4-bromofuran derivatives approached 70% inhibition against C. glabrata for all metal complexes. 210 Pyridine derivatised carboxamide ligands (Fig.…”

“…Complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with general formula 225 (R = H or CH 3 ) (Figure 26) were prepared from two structurally similar ligands having a carboxamide motif. [ 202 ] These two ligands were obtained starting either from thiophene‐2‐carbonyl chloride or from 5‐methylthiophene‐2‐carbonyl chloride, which were both reacted with KSCN to yield the corresponding thiocyanates, which were then treated with di‐ n ‐propylamine. The antimicrobial activity of complexes 225 as well as that of the parent ligands was evaluated using the disc diffusion method against a panel comprising six Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacterial strains and six fungal strains.…”
