Metal Contamination in Select Species of Birds in Nilgiris District, Tamil Nadu, India

Abstract: Variation in metal contamination in six species of birds, namely the Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), Pond Heron (Ardeola grayii), Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) and Jungle Babbler (Turdoides striatus) in Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu, India. The accumulation of heavy metals differed among the species studied. On an average, Little Egret accumulated high concentrations of copper (53.31 ± 23.19 ppm) followed by Cattle Egret (16.27 ± 9.83 ppm) in… Show more

“…Accumulation of toxic metals in feedstuffs destined for human or livestock animal consumption can be easily checked and monitored whereas the diet of wild animals is almost impossible to regulate. Heavy metals have been shown to accumulate in kidney, liver, blood, feathers, eggs and bones (Burger and Gochfeld 1993; Fasola et al 1998; Mateo and Guitart 2003; Deng et al 2007; Jayakumar and Muralidharan 2011; Farahani et al 2015; Kitowski et al 2016; Zarrintab and Mirzaei 2018).…”

“…Cattle egret and mallard drake feathers contained the highest concentration of Pb while sunbird had the lowest one as seen in Figure 3. Jayakumar and Muralidharan reported high concentration of Cu (53.31 ± 23.19 ppm) in little egret followed by cattle egret with concentration of 16.27 ± 9.83 ppm in liver (23). Hen and guinea fowl feathers recorded the highest concentration of Cd while sunbird revealed the lowest one as seen in Figure 4.…”

“…India is another country which is highly contaminated with lead. In the case of the cattle egret ( Bubulcus ibis ) and the little egret ( Egretta garzetta ) from Nilgiris district, Tamil Nadu (India), the concentrations of lead in the livers were 13.26 ± 1.23 μg/g dw and 3.23 ± 1.60 μg/g dw (Jayakumar and Muralidharan 2011 ). These results point to a persistant and significantly higher level of lead in these areas of Asia, even in comparison to measurements taken in North America during the time when leaded petrol was used.…”
