Metal frame reinforced bulk metallic glass composites

Abstract: Inspired by the aseismic structure of skyscrapers, Ti6Al4V frames with tubular structure were designed, 3D printed and thermoplastic formed with Zr 35 Ti 30 Be 26.75 Cu 8.25 bulk metallic glass matrix under ultrasonic vibration, forming sandwich-structured bulk metallic glass composites. The interface characterization between matrix and frame reveals a typical metallurgical bonding. By tuning the geometry of Ti6Al4V frame, the composites manifest an enhanced fracture toughness of 213 MPa m 1/2 , 2.3 times high… Show more

“…In addition to reducing the roughness in the AM process, post-treatment steps, such as those involving the formation of a coating or oxide on the surface, are generally not required. At present, the research trend of amorphous alloy SLM manufacturing is that on the one hand, the development of new materials is in progress, and on the other hand, the research results of material forming in the early stage have promoted the continuous development of new structures, such as the honeycomb structure [137] and metal frame reinforced BMG composites [31]. The composite material greatly improves the specific strength, quasi-plasticity, and elastic elongation of the metallic glass SLM structure.…”

“…The bulk metallic glass prepared by this method has the potential for engineering applications [29,30]. Inspired by the seismic structure of skyscrapers, Li designed a tubular structure of Ti 6 Al 4 V frame [31]. Under ultrasonic vibration, Zr 35 Ti 30 Be 26.75 Cu 8.25 was used for 3D printing and thermoplastic molding with a large metal glass matrix to form a sandwich structure of large metal glass composite material.…”

“…The development of expanded areas of application requires the possibility of joining with materials of the same type and, in particular, with crystalline materials, including light alloys such as aluminum [ 3 , 4 ]. In addition to the direct manufacture of a product, the production of semi-finished products is also possible, for example composite materials in sandwich construction with a crystalline core and metallic glasses as cover layers [ 8 ]. A suitable joining technique must ensure that, in addition to high joint strength, the amorphous structure of the metallic glasses and thus their special properties are retained [ 7 ].…”

“…Recent years have seen active research in the area of aluminum matrix composites directed at evaluating the suitability of alternative (non-ceramics) reinforcements. In novel composites, particles of intermetallics [2,3], quasicrystals [4], high-entropy alloys [5,6], or metallic glasses [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] are used as the reinforcing elements. These composites are usually produced by powder metallurgy via consolidation of mixtures of the matrix metal and metallic alloy powders.…”

“…In most studies dealing with metallic glass-aluminum mixtures, the goal has been to preserve the glassy state of the reinforcement during the formation of the bulk material. Composites have been obtained, in which the layers forming at the metal matrix/metallic glass interface possess very small thicknesses (in the nanometer range) [12,14]. When a particle introduced into a matrix starts chemically interacting with it, a core-shell structure forms upon partial consumption of the particle material.…”
